Union Minister of State Daggubati Purandeshwari, who was denied the promised promotion to the cabinet rank, finally got the solace. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday elevated to her the MoS with independent charge.
However, she was shifted from high profile commerce and industry ministry to less important textile portfolio, though with an independent charge.
During the recent cabinet reshuffle, the prime minister had promised to promote Purandeshwari to the cabinet rank, but thanks to pressure tactics from senior MPs like Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao and Renuka Chowdary, the Prime Minister had to withdraw the promotion, though he gave her the important portfolio of commerce and industry.
But within four days, Purandeshwari got the elevation, if not as the cabinet minister, but as MoS with independent charge. Since the textile portfolio has been lying vacant after the resignation of Dayanidhi Maran, she was given the portfolio.
It may be mentioned that Panabaka Lakshmi, who was MoS for textiles, was shifted to the more important petroleum portfolio to play second fiddle to Veerappa Moily.
